home sweet maine

It has been lovely to be back home.  So far, I have mostly been relaxing: sleeping in, knitting, reading, doing a little last minute shopping.  I also donated my hair yesterday!  I cut off almost 9 inches for the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program...kind of a dramatic change.  I'm enjoying the new style though.

before
after!
Basically that's the most exciting news from Maine.  Not doing work for classes has been great, but here are some things I enjoyed during finals week:

-I Must Belong Somewhere by Bright Eyes.  I listened to this song on iTunes genius a lot.
-Along with If Work Permits by The Format.  Like Imma Be, it features a good tempo change :)
-I started watching the TV show Whitney.  I enjoyed it more than I thought I would...it's actually pretty funny.

That's all for now.  I hope everyone's holidays are off to a good start.  Hope for snow!!

you can do anything for 3 weeks

It's the final countdown to the end of the fall semester.  2 weeks of classes and 1 week of finals are all that's left before winter break relaxation.  There's a lot of stuff to get done, but I just keep reminding myself that soon I will have about 2 months with limited work and lots of free time.

That being said, it was great to have a few days off last week for Thanksgiving.  Some highlights from our western NY adventures:
-spending time with my family
-eating a delicious cupcake (devil's food cake with cream cheese frosting) from Dolce Cupcakery in Pittsford, NY
-eating lots of good food in general, especially stuffing and yummy Chinese food
-knitting (current project is a hat made out of pretty multicolored sock yarn...picture to come upon completion)
-getting tons of sleep

And now for some youtube entertainment:
-Here's a newish Rihanna song I like, We Found Love.
-BeyoncĂ©'s Move Your Body, a dance routine for Let's Move.  It's a program through the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation designed to help make kids more active.  I'm a big fan of dance-related exercise (Just Dance and DDR all the way!)
-If you haven't seen it yet, Marcel Part 2.  Wonderful.

Finally, here's a short article from the New Yorker discussing the Keystone XL oil pipeline and how it relates to Occupy Wall Street.  Enjoy the week, and to quote Mia Hamm for a little semester's end inspiration "I've worked too hard and too long to let anything stand in the way of my goals. I will not let my teammates down and I will not let myself down."  Peace.

200 Days?!

-There are about 200 days until commencement!  How crazy/surreal.
-Today was my last bannerweb registration ever.  I'll miss waking up at 6:50 to enter CRN's as fast as possible (not...)
-Brett Dennen this weekend, yay for happy music.
-A much-needed vacation in less than a week.
-Super excited for winter break, J Term, spring, etc.  Basically life.

And if you haven't seen this video, check it out:

It's Wednesday...two more classes before the weekend :)

halloween!!

The last day of October!  I don't know where time has gone, but it has been passing rapidly.  Since my last post, we've had two great regattas and we're now officially off the water until spring break.  I'm sad, except rowing in the snow is not my fave...so it's all for the best.  Over fall break, I started reading Bossypants by Tina Fey.  It's hilarious and such a great break from homework (which I should be doing now, oh well).  I also got to see my family in Boston, and I'm just so happy with how most of life in general has been going.  Very sunny.

I was a house elf for Halloween - I got inspired at the premiere this summer.  It was fun and exciting to actually have a costume, since usually I forget until the day of.  On an unrelated note, here's a link to an interesting and slightly scary article about bioterrorism: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/30/magazine/how-ready-are-we-for-bioterrorism.html?pagewanted=1&hpw.  It's long but worth it.

Also, this song has been playing over and over on my iPod (and in my mind) for the past few weeks.  I'm putting up a link to the audio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpWsVw9HfBQ.  If you really want to watch the video, go for it, but fair warning: it's kinda disturbing.  So just listen.

And now it is actually time for homework.  May the fist week of November be productive, fun, and not too cold.  peaceandlove.

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

It's been a crazy past few days and my brain is having trouble forming sentences, so I'm just going to make a list of things that are exciting/happy.

-new earrings!  purchased with Robin, I got some silver waterlillies and pink octopuses :)
-a new, fuzzy, gray Middlebury sweatshirt.  cozy cozy cozy.
-winning our race last weekend!
-sleeping a lot
-fall break
-going to Boston for the weekend/getting free stuff at the Head of the Charles
-being able to (sort of) play a few notes on the oboe

And here's the link to a song I like - pretty sure it was the free iTunes song of the week awhile ago, but it's blog-appropriate and fun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sZDn3C7Bh8

the sun will come out tomorrow (or in a few days...)

It has been rather dismal for the past couple of days (weather-wise).  Luckily, the forecast looks good for the end of this week and our upcoming first home regatta!  I'm really looking forward to hosting UVM on Saturday for a little scrimmage - should be fun to have some other boats rowing with us on Lake Dunmore.

Right after my last post, something else exciting happened...I went to the organic garden for the first time ever!  We harvested probably almost 300 pounds of butternut squash and I ate a delicious carrot.  It was quite fun and I'm excited to go back in the future.

Also.  Starting this week, I'm going to be learning to play the OBOE!  I've sort of jokingly said I wanted to learn it for awhile, but now I actually have the chance to!  I am a little nervous that our orchestra concert is November 12th.  There isn't much time, but I hope that with lots of practice I'll be able to play my part by then!

I can't believe it's already October.  School starting late this year has really messed with me.  Crazy crazy.  I should probably get back to work, but in the meantime, some Lady Gaga for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9YMU0WeBwU&ob=av2n.  And an interesting and relevant NYTimes opinion piece: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/26/opinion/an-indefensible-punishment.html?_r=1&hp.  May this week be full of happiness :)

FRIDAY!!!

I'm so glad it's the weekend...another crazy week is done, but it feels like we've already been at school for at least a month (in a good way).  Here's a list of things I'm especially excited about:
-Atwater breakfast.  Today I had a great combination: plain yogurt, strawberries, grapes, and dark chocolate.  So delicious.
-Doing the woo drill at crew practice this morning :)
-A lovely (albeit early) week of rowing and sunrises on Lake Dunmore
-Seeing some shooting stars
-The return of some t.v. shows - Glee this week was especially good
I'm sure there are many more things I have forgotten, but that's a solid list for now.  I can't wait for the rest of the semester.  Fall is always my favorite, and I have a feeling this year is going to be great.  Happy weekend!

and so it begins

I'm super sorry for neglecting the sunny side recently...life has been crazy!  One week of classes down and I'm already feeling quite busy, but it's great to be back at Middlebury.  Fall in Vermont is so pretty, and the past few days have been mostly warm and pleasant (though there's a frost warning tonight!).

It's so weird to be a senior.   I love feeling like I know what I'm doing, but I also miss some of the excitement of freshman fall.  Mostly, though, I'm thankful to have such great friends and be able to spend my fourth year here.

my lovely window and plants!
Speaking of why Middlebury is awesome, I got a free plant from the greenhouse this week!  It's called a Purple Heart, and the leaves are supposed to stay purple if it gets enough sun.  It was also Greek night yesterday, and falafel is always a wonderful treat.  It has also been lovely to be rowing on the water again.  Other than today's upcoming 6k, crew is nice :)

That's about all for now, but here's a song I recently discovered and like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjoA4nYBD5U

May the week ahead be happy and successful!

"Storms a comin'. She's gonna blow."

As Robert McCloskey writes in his lovely children's book "Time of Wonder," storms are exciting times on the coast.  Huge waves and powerful winds batter the shore, and the sea spray mixes with the rains.  With all this talk, I'm a little excited to sit inside and watch the Irene this weekend.  Luckily, it should only be a tropical storm by the time it hits Maine - hopefully there won't be too much damage.  Should be interesting.

I had a great trip to the beach today to prepare for the storm, where I finished my latest book, Barack Obama's "Dreams from My Father."  It was so interesting to hear about Obama's childhood and ancestry, and I'm glad I read it.  Here's the rest of my summer reading list: I need at least one more book for the summer (to get to 20).

1. The Man of My Dreams
2. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
3. Thirteen Moons
4. Mountains Beyond Mountains
5. A Discovery of Witches
6. The Last Lecture
7. Chocolat
8. Blink
9. I Think I Love You
10. Commencement
11. The Elegance of the Hedgehog
12. Sisterhood Everlasting
13. Poisoned
14. Big Girl Small
15. The History of Love
16. In Cold Blood
17. Mortal Lessons
18. Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
19. Dreams from My Father

An interesting mix...it has just been so great to be reading for fun again.

Exactly 2 weeks from today are Middlebury move-in and my 21st birthday, both of which I'm very excited for.  I can't wait for senior year, and spending the fall in Vermont (rowing on Lake Dunmore) is gorgeous.

Finally, here's a song I've been listening to a lot lately.  It's very sunny side.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtLKlB6XcC4

That's all for now, have a good weekend!

Craziness!

So it's the last three weeks of summer.  The end of junior year feels like it happened awhile ago, but at the same time I can't believe it's already the middle of August.  Here's what is on my agenda for the rest of the month:
-read as much as possible (soon to come: a list of what I've read this summer)
-buy a few things for school
-exercise a lot
-beach it

The big news of this post is that finally, after 20 years, I have gotten my ears pierced!  It was a pretty random decision, but I'm excited to enter this new chapter of my life.  Not so excited about dealing with them for the next six weeks...oh well, a sacrifice for fashion.  And you can imagine how cool I looked walking around the mall with my Claire's bag :)

Also, I just bought a clown fish pen drive.  So so cool.

If you didn't see the NYTimes magazine today, here's a cool project being done to benefit the relief efforts in Japan: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/08/21/magazine/mag-21Look-paper-cranes.html?ref=magazine

Finally, here's a song I have recently discovered - Don't Stop the Party by the Black Eyed Peas (I'm always a fan): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9LH_y159sg&ob=av3e

Peace out, enjoy the rest of the month!

August!!

I have a lot of stuff to get done today, so this is going to be a short post, but here are a few things of note:

1.  It's August!  I am getting really excited to head back to Vermont soonish, but in the meantime, I'm trying to soak up as much sun as possible and enjoy having free time.

2.  Speaking of soaking up the sun, I think this photo shows how successful my summer has been so far.

3.  I'm usually not a huge Colbie Caillat fan, but I do like this song a lot...very happy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU5o6M7S5nQ&ob=av3e

That's all for now.  My family is off on a little vacation next week, which will be great.  Keep on the sunny side :)

Saturday, July 30, 2011

hi

It's a beautiful day in Falmouth.  Luckily, the heat wave has subsided, so it's in the 80's rather than the 90's (or over 100...).  I'm hoping it stays this nice for our vacation in a couple weeks; hiking and biking are much more fun when it's sunny.

I just finished a really interesting book about the E. coli outbreak in 1992/1993.  Over 700 people got sick from eating tainted hamburger meat at Jack in the Box, the oldest fast food chain in the country.  Four children ended up dying, and it was a major turning point in food safety.  I hadn't heard of Jack in the Box - missing out on the East coast - and I don't eat hamburger, but it's scary to think that so many people got sick.  Anyways, it's called Poisoned and I would highly recommend.

This week I discovered Spotify and Google+.  I feel so up on current technology :)  Not sure how I feel about them quite yet, but I will keep you posted.

Peace out, hope everyone's enjoying the last weekend of July!

"Favorites"

It has been brought to my attention that I have a lot of favorite things.  So, here's a list of some things I think are swell:

Foods
-cotton candy
-sea dog biscuits (two chocolate chip cookies with ice cream in the middle)
-fudge
-chocolate covered blueberries
i also like non-dessert food, such as:
-spinach lasagna
-shrimp scampi

Things to do
-go to the beach/swim in the ocean
-puzzles
-sleeping in late

Music
-too many to list, but basically i have a lot of faves
-ke$ha haha

It has been so so hot in Maine recently, which is great at the beach and not-so-great sitting in all the construction going on around Portland.  Alas, can't complain since it's infinitely better than two years ago when it rained almost every day.

I'm currently reading "Sisterhood Everlasting" by the author of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series.  It's rather addictive, and SO surprising (and sad).  Also, just found out that Border's is completely going out of business, so no more long trips to browse in South Portland.  What a bummer.

Basically, life is great, and I can't believe there are still almost two months left of summer.  I'm already so relaxed and have been loving reading, getting sun on the beach, seeing friends (and working too I guess...).  It's a lovely world.

A happy group of frog musicians from Quebec.

happy fourth of july!

So it's officially July.  It really feels like we were just watching the fireworks last year.  Time flies.  The good thing is that it now feels very summery outside.  There are also tons of dragonflies.

I'm going to go enjoy the weather, but first here's a funny little op-ed piece from today's nytimes: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/07/04/opinion/20110704_OPART.html?hp

Have a wonderful holiday and (short) week ahead!

end of june

Our trip to Canada was very interesting...QuĂ©bec is an entirely different place in June (rather than February)!  We went to the MusĂ©e de la Civilisation in the city, which usually has good exhibits.  This time, there was one on different world religions and another on food.  The food exhibit was pretty thought-provoking and cool to look at.  It's based on a book called "Hungry Planet" that came out in 2005 and shows photos of how much food families around the world consume in a week, including costs in US dollars.  Here's a link with some of the pictures: http://www.foodmatters.tv/_webapp_482785/What_The_World_Eats_-_Shocking_Photos

We saw some cute little towns farther north along the St. Lawrence.  There were great views of the river, lots of lupines, and I experienced a new side of the area.  I complained about driving 8 hours north for a vacation, but it was good.

I'm getting excited for fireworks this weekend at the Sea Dogs game and the Portland show on Monday.  Should be great!  Though I can't believe it's already July...where is the summer going?

Lastly, here's a little canada haiku:

canada was fun
pretty sights and lots of french
(but not the mail strike!)

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

oh canada

We're headed to Canada on a little family vacation tomorrow.  I'm looking forward to it, but I'm not too psyched about traveling somewhere colder than Maine.  Oh well.  Hopefully it won't be too dismal and I will remember my french.

I still can't really move from doing an ab workout on Sunday.  Even pipetting hurts my arm, how sad.  But I guess it's just a necessary part of "gettin' huge" for the fall.  Success is a decision.  I know it's a long way off, but I'm still excited for lovely fall rows on Lake Dunmore.

The other day I finished "The Last Lecture."  I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an inspirational read.  I really admire Randy Pausch's life outlook.  It's easy for someone like me to keep on the sunny side: I have nothing major to complain about, and I would consider my life to be pretty awesome.  But even when faced with a terminal diagnosis, Pausch chose to do his best to make his last months rewarding.  Warning: you will probably cry.  A lot.  I did, but it's worth it, and it truly makes you evaluate your life and attitude.

Off to enjoy the sun!  Have a great week.

a list of happy things

-the bruins winning!
-today was sunny
-the air outside smells like flowers
-the glee project (just started watching...promising so far)
-good books
-my blog has more than 1000 views :-o

yay, can't believe it's already the middle of june!  peace.

glee and other adventures

It's been a good week.  The ticks, mice, and other small mammals were good during the first half, and I was in DC at the end of the week for GLEE LIVE!  Which was a lot of fun.  The cast is really talented, and they performed a wide range of songs from the show.  One of my favorite parts was "Safety Dance," where Artie gets out of his wheelchair and dances.  Here's a link to when they did it on the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SG4WOUB3wB4

Also, today was the Old Port Festival in Portland.  I'd never been before, and despite the rain and cold, it was a good time.  I ate some cotton candy and saw Hot Chelle Rae perform.  They have a single, "Tonight Tonight," that has been popular recently (in case you're interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzlNFcT2aOE).

I'm on to book five of the summer, A Discovery of Witches.  It's interesting so far...it involves vampires, witches, and daemons, though it's surprisingly realistic.  It's also written by a history professor, so maybe that's part of way it seems a lot more sophisticated than the other vampire books I've read (plus, it is aimed at adults).

And here's an interesting editorial from the NYTimes today about Anthony Weiner and gender in politics: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/12/weekinreview/12women.html?ref=weekinreview

Here's to a great week ahead!

work and play

I started work today (back in the tick lab).  I've had a nice and relaxing two weeks so it's good to be a little busier again.

My whole family went to see the Avett Brothers on Thursday night.  So good!  They're awesome live and they played a lot of my favorites.  Not from the concert, but this is a great song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9EdbZ6WjOA.

I'm also looking forward to seeing Glee Live on Thursday...should be fun!

And a current event video clip - oh goodness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oS4C7bvHv2w&feature=aso.

The summer has been nice so far, but I'm missing friends, and I can tell that come September, I'll be ready for Midd again.  Have a great week!

the way life should be

It's hard to believe I've been back home for only a week.  Basically what I've accomplished is:
-gone swimming in the ocean (x3)
-done all my laundry
-read 2 books
But it has been nice to relax and unwind.

I have also been doing a lot of music-listening.  The other day I heard Hey Mama by Mat Kearney and I recommend; it's a happy summer song.

And CAN'T WAIT FOR THE AVETT BROTHERS ON THURSDAY!!

Also, here's an article about the benefits of being bilingual - motivation to practice my French over the summer?  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/31/science/31conversation.html?_r=1&ref=science

That's all for now, I'm off to run and enjoy the sun :)

the beginning of goodbye

Over the weekend, a lot of students moved out of the dorms.  I still have one more exam and a full week before I head back to Maine, so it's weird to see everyone starting to leave.

One more exam!  Microeconomics is all that separates me from several months of (near) academic freedom.  I'm really looking forward to doing some reading for fun - perhaps lying on the beach?  Books currently on my list are:
-The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
-A Discovery of Witches
-Unbroken
Can't wait to hit up the library and get started.

In the meantime, my reading mostly consists of the newspaper, so here's an article about college graduates and being overly optimistic (if there is such a thing...)
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/15/opinion/15Sharot.html?_r=1&hp

Also, I'm getting a haircut for the first time in two years when I get back to Maine.  I think I'm going to donate it again, to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, which makes wigs for women with cancer.  Pictures to come once that happens!

And finally, Hello by Martin Solveig.  I've been listening to this song on repeat for most of the past week...I think it's rather sunny side.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Na85fPGYCM

That's all for now.  Don't the rain get you down.

a bit of stress

I don't like finals week.  Especially in the spring.  The sun is so tempting, but there's a seemingly endless amount of studying to do.  Tomorrow the madness begins, but soon everything will be over.  I'm about to go to bed in preparation for my morning exam, but I wanted to share some good new-ish music from Josh Ritter (thanks Will!).  Good for studying.
http://joshritter.com/2011/02/04/to-the-yet-unknowning-world-ep/

Also, so excited about the new addition to the crew family :)  Here's the little sweater:

Good luck with the next week!  Don't forget to smile and spend time with friends...because you can't always be studying.

THE END OF THE YEAR?!?!?!

It's the last week of classes.  Crazy.  I'm excited for: Maine, the ocean, warm weather, having free time.  But I'm not so psyched about: finals, (almost) being a senior, leaving friends behind.  I really can't believe it's already been three years.  That being said, I'm set on having a great final three weeks.

This past weekend was the New England Rowing Championships, our last main regatta for the season.  It was a beautiful day and a great way to end the spring.  Crossing the finish line after our second race was the first time I have cried at crew out of happiness.  There really isn't anything like a 2k.

So.  It's back to work as the deadlines draw nearer.  If you're in need of some procrastination, though, here's a great website: http://cuteroulette.com/#/.  It's like stumbleupon but only cute videos.  And here's my sunny side advice for finals week:
-listen to good music
-take walks outside (when it's sunny)
-sit down for meals in the dining hall/enjoy the company of friends
-don't stress, because it really all matters a lot less than you think.
And some happy little easter chicks.  Enjoy :)

Thursday, April 21, 2011

This week, we've had our first real morning practices of the spring. It's an odd sensation to be waking up at 4:30 when the rest of campus is completely dead. There's nothing like rowing with a sunrise in the background on Lake Dunmore. The water is often flatter in the morning, and now that we have a dock to launch from, life is good.

Rowing requires complete focus on every stroke. The rest of your life may be out of control, but for a couple hours you have to be fully committed to the task at hand and leave the chaos behind. As much as I whine about waking up early and being tired, crew practice is one of the most rewarding parts of my day.

And now it's off to bed before another morning practice. First, though, some entertainment:
-A number of people have shown this to me recently. Cute: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K3MXY5ITxQ&feature=player_embedded
-This song got so many plays in Georgia...it deserved to be on the blog: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLJf9qJHR3E
-Cool article about music from the Science Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/19/science/19brain.html?ref=science

don't worry, be happy

For the past few days I've been pretty anxious about my physics test (starting in about 20 hours). In most other parts of my life, I have tried to worry less; being unnecessarily anxious about the future just makes the present less enjoyable. For some reason, though, exams continue to be quite stressful for me. So before I call it quits with the studying and head to bed, I decided to look up and share some quotations about worrying.

Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy. ~Leo Buscaglia

Do not anticipate trouble or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight. ~Benjamin Franklin

Nerves and butterflies are fine - they're a physical sign that you're mentally ready and eager. You have to get the butterflies to fly in formation, that's the trick. ~Steve Bull

We can easily manage if we will only take, each day, the burden appointed to it. But the load will be too heavy for us if we carry yesterday's burden over again today, and then add the burden of the morrow before we are required to bear it. ~John Newton

I think it's important to be at least a little nervous for things you really care about. But when fear becomes paralyzing, it's counterproductive. You're not always going to succeed, but by going in to most endeavors with some preparation and a positive attitude, the results are generally good. Here's to a successful second round of midterms!

Sunday, April 3, 2011

Hello April

So it's back from spring break and on to the rest of the semester. Georgia was simultaneously fun and exhausting. The weather was pretty bad, and it's kind of hard to find the sunny side when the previous week was beautiful and next week looks great. Luckily, though, it didn't rain too much during our actual practices, and since it was so cold, rowing in Vermont won't be very different. How's that for optimism? :)

It's a bit overwhelming to be back at Middlebury, faced with the reality that there's not a whole lot of time left before I'm a senior. At this midpoint in the semester, I'd like to make some resolutions. First, I want to get my work done relatively early to have as much free time as possible. I also want to spend time with friends, especially those who are graduating. And finally, I am going to try to keep complaining to a minimum.

Now for some musical entertainment. It's going to be awhile before I can hear the words "It's Friday" without thinking of Rebecca Black's song. I have no idea how it has more than 80 million views on YouTube. Crazy. Even though it drives me kind of insane, here's a funny version from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon - http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/blogs/2011/04/stephen-colbert-sings-friday-with-the-roots/

I much prefer "Friday I'm in Love" by The Cure - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa2nLEhUcZ0

Also, here's an article from the New York Times talking about a new FDA rule that would exempt movie theaters from displaying caloric information. With numerous fast food chains showing the nutrition facts of meals, it seems logical for movie theaters to also comply. I think it could go a long way to help people realize what exactly they're eating - http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/02/business/02menu.html?ref=health

It's Almost Spring Break

This week is rather busy, but there are several things I'm happy about:
1. Banana-chocolate cake tonight at Ross
2. Warm(er) weather on the way in Georgia
3. The end of winter training for crew
4. Only 6 pages, 2 homework assignments, and an application until a week of minimal work
5. Having good friends
I'm looking forward to having a break before the second half of the semester begins, and going to Georgia is always great. Putting so much energy into rowing is really rewarding and a nice change of pace.
This article is kind of old, but I just saw it on the NYTimes website and it addresses some interesting issues.

Music

I've spent a lot of time studying over the past week. For me, listening to music while I read, do a problem set, or memorize terms helps me focus, but more importantly, it keeps me happy. Music has the unique ability to grab onto your mood and turn it completely around.

Making music is also a vital part of my life. When playing the flute, I can leave behind my individual mental and physical condition for the music in front of me. One of the conductors I worked with in high school always said "music sounds how feelings feel." Sometimes you can't find the right words to describe a situation, but music has the power to evoke powerful emotional responses. And as elegantly stated by Victor Hugo, "Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent."

So here are some songs that are especially meaningful to me:
-An American Elegy: Piece for wind ensemble written by Frank Ticheli to honor those who lost their lives at Columbine High School. Both playing and just listening to this piece make my heart hurt. Such great composing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIIKdBYfmlo
-Kathleen: Song by Josh Ritter. One of my favorites...can't help but smile listening to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bm3lWq4s5-U
-I'll Fly Away: As sung by Alison Krauss and Gillian Welch in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" The lyrics of this song are powerful, and I love this arrangement. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdRdqp4N3Jw
-I and Love and You: One of my favorites by the Avett Brothers. Just so wonderful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqZZlL0l5Uk

That's just a sampling of music I love. Find what inspires you and you may find writing that paper isn't so bad after all. Happy Friday!

Snow Day!

One of the sad things about college is that there are rarely snow days. At least in Vermont. Many professors live very close to campus, and there are fewer of the transportation issues that gave us unexpected days off when I was younger. Yesterday, though, came pretty close. About two feet of snow fell, covering the recently-exposed grass and creating chaos across campus. It was great weather for sledding and ignoring schoolwork (which I'm beginning to regret), and it made me a little more excited for spring break and traveling to Georgia.

Today, it's back to work. The semester's definitely in full swing...I had my first exam today, and life in general is rather busy. But life is also good. This year for Lent, I've decided to give up Facebook (rather than dessert) so we'll see how that goes. I'm going to try and make an effort to have more meaningful interactions with the people in my life, as well as waste less time online. It'll be a tough 40 days, but I'm up for the challenge.

Here are a couple interesting reads:

BEST DAY EVER!!!

Saturday was a pretty wonderful day. Maybe not the best, but definitely up there. It began with great skiing on fresh snow at Breadloaf. There was a Bill Koch race going on, and they had FREE maple cotton candy and maple sugar on snow (which, if you've never tried, is my favorite food). After skiing was the men's hockey game. Unfortunately, Middlebury lost, but on the bright side it marked the last time we have to clean up the arena this year. I spent the rest of the day hanging out with friends, and all in all it was a lot of fun.

So now it's on to another week of classes. Hope everyone enjoys the last day of February (!) and has a great week! And can't wait for the Avett Brothers on June 2nd in Portland!

A Cold and Blustery Saturday

This weekend is Winter Carnival at Middlebury. It's a fun and festive time, with lots of events and ski racing! I spent most of Saturday at the Snowbowl gatekeeping for the alpine races. If you've never done it before, it's not very fun. Basically you stand on the side of the mountain for 2+ hours making sure the racers go through your gates, quickly run back down and defrost, then repeat. This time, it was especially cold and windy, making for a long day. Why, you may ask, is this on the sunny side blog? Well, to keep myself motivated and somewhat happy I kept thinking about a warm maple steamer from Otter Creek Bakery! (http://www.ottercreekbakery.com/home.php) Pretty much the most delicious drink ever.

Motivation in the form of food is a common theme in my life. In high school, I would bring a cookie or other treat to nordic ski races and push myself up hills by dreaming about the reward waiting at the finish. Sundae Sundays, Falafel night, no-bake cookies, and chocolate chip banana muffins are some of my Midd faves. It's a good morale-booster, in my opinion.

On another note, I don't know how many people tuned into the Grammy's, but I'm a big fan of Lady Gaga's new song, Born This Way. Her performance was pretty impressive, and I think the song has a good message. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xl0N7JM3wZk.

I know I'm feeling the stress of the semester starting, and I really appreciate all the kind words of my friends. Hope everyone has a great week!

Happy Valentine's Day

It's the beginning of the second week of classes and...Valentine's Day! While I may not be celebrating with a romantic dinner or anything too exciting, I've decided to take the day to appreciate the love, friendship, and kindness around me. Having great people in your life makes all the difference.

Week 1

Today was remarkable for a few reasons. First, they had NO-BAKE COOKIES for the first time all year!!! It was wonderful. Then, Nick was eating a grapefruit in Ross that appeared to have more than 14 segments! Like about 17 perhaps. It's the first time I've ever seen more than 14. So weird.

I also watched the season finale of Lie to Me. If you don't watch this show (which is true of most people), you should check it out. It's very interesting and exciting. Anyways, the finale was thought-provoking and feel-good in the end...I don't want to give anything away if you do watch it, but I really hope it gets renewed for another season.

It has been a pretty busy first week back, but I'm looking forward to all my classes. It's nice to still have time to read for fun and take lots of breaks from studying. I finished Mockingjay, the last book of the Hunger Games series. The ending was optimistic without being happy, but I would still recommend them. And if you haven't been to Ilsley Library, you should check it out. That's where I got this book from, and they have a surprisingly large selection of books.

Well, it's back to some physics. Oh, and if you're looking for some good music, check out The Avett Brothers Pandora station. It's a good one.

what makes me happy

warm, homemade soup
good books
knitting
being tired after exercising
chocolate things (and most desserts)
clean sheets
flowers
the ocean and beaches
fresh fruit

and a lot of other things. I love anticipating little parts of my days and weeks. It's nice to have something to look forward to, even if it's small.

I am trying to keep all this little happy things in mind as I brace myself for the start of 4 new classes. I'm almost all moved into my new single. It's weird to get used to living alone again and I miss having a roomie :( But it has forced me to clean up and get organized for spring!

It was also a little sad to leave behind Maine for almost 4 months. I'm going to miss it. I miss the ocean, LLBean, favorite restaurants, and seeing familiar faces. One thing that makes Maine unique is Marden's, the discount surplus store managed by Governor Paul LePage. They have pretty funny and ridiculous commercials starring Karmo Sanders, aka Birdie Googins or just "The Marden's Lady." I can't help but laugh when I see them on T.V. So for anyone who's not from Maine, or if you just haven't had enough of her, here are some websites and videos you might want to check out:

Reading During the Blizzard

As another 2ish feet of snow fall around my house, I've had time to do a lot of reading. I finished the second book in the Hunger Games series, Catching Fire, today. They are borderline addicting (can't put them down and you need to finish ASAP) and make you think. I'm currently reading The Devil in the White City, a book about the World's Fair held in Chicago in 1893. It talks about the architects and planners involved and follows the story of a serial killer. Scary, but it's interesting and I'm enjoying it so far.

Also, the Science Times this week was very good. Here's some of the articles I liked the most.
About the efforts to eradicate polio - http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/01/health/01polio.html?adxnnl=1&ref=science&adxnnlx=1296601205-LpfGlGi02bvwXRB133dF8w

Cool Ideas

Taking Public Health over JTerm made me realize how many shortcomings there are in health care around the world. But even though there's a lot to be done, there are also some very interesting and exciting ideas out there.

On the last day of class, our professor mentioned PlayPumps, where a fun merry-go-round-like thing that kids can play on brings water up from underground to a community pump. Here's the website; it's an awesome concept.
http://www.waterforpeople.org/extras/playpumps/how-playpumps-works.html

I also just read an article in the New Yorker about recent attempts at curbing spending for the highest cost patients. Some of the programs they are testing out seem to be very effective, and hopefully they will catch on across the country.

Ideas like these make me optimistic that more people will be able to enjoy a higher quality of life in the future.

All Hail the Grapefruit

January at Middlebury is one of the best times to eat grapefruit. With abundant free time and ripe, juicy fruit readily available, there's really no excuse not to enjoy this awesome food.

Also, it's cool to eat grapefruits; they have recently been popularized in celebrity diet regimens. Though the "grapefruit diet" might not be the best choice for everyone, taking time out of your day to slow down and enjoy what you're eating is definitely beneficial. A grapefruit does exactly that.

If you don't have a lot of experience with grapefruits, the thought of eating one might be a little intimidating. But with a little practice, it's easy to become a grapefruit pro. Some people like to peel their grapefruit and eat the segments. I personally find this a little messy and prefer to cut it in half, then eat each half segment. Make sure you cut around the edge of each segment for an optimal grapefruit experience. Here are some tips:
-Pick a grapefruit that is yellow with a slight pink tinge.
-Your grapefruit should be a little squishy, but not too much.
-Be prepared. Get a knife, a spoon, and napkins.
-Drink the juice at the end, it's yummy!

Grapefruits are a very interesting fruit, and here are some fun facts:
-The U.S. produces the most grapefruit of any country, and grapefruit is best in season in the winter and early spring.
-Grapefruit used to be called the "forbidden fruit."
-Grapefruits usually have 10 to 14 segments. Since I read that fact last year, I've counted the number of segments in every grapefruit I have eaten and have never found less than 10 or more than 14. So if you do, take a picture! It might be a rare mutant!
-I have read some articles that say grapefruits may have bad interactions with some medications, so be careful!

Now get out there and eat some grapefruit!

JTerm!

So the end of JTerm is drawing near. It's been lots of fun this year, with much snow, hockey, knitting, relaxing meals, Beethoven, and interesting reading. Public Heath Policy has been a great class, and I've enjoyed learning about a variety of issues. Mostly, though, it's been great to have time to play and enjoy life. I just finished my fingerless glove mitten things (glittens?) and I think I'm addicted to knitting. I might need to break this addiction before second semester starts, but for now it's a most wonderful pastime.

In other news: I am very sad to be leaving the wonderful double, but I'll be moving into a new single for the spring. I'm going to miss my dear Robin, but I know New Zealand will be a most excellent adventure.

Now, off to bed before the big presentation on Eastern Equine Encephalitis tomorrow! Can't wait for the temperatures to make it back into the 20's :)
